History jokes

Ιανουάριος13

It is well know that history is written by the winner or the most powerful, the ruler and as in all cases, it is a point of view matter the final image you got about it.

I don’t care to show anything by this post but express my surprise caused by one question I heard during an American show. Actually just a few minutes ago I watched by accident a show about the most genious or something like that kid in America and one of the questions was about the Roman Emprire. To be more specific the question asked: «While the Roman Empire started to diminish an other one established in Constantinoupolis started to grow. What’s its name?». And the answer? Byzantine Empire!

Well, I am Hellene (Greek) and although I was taught at school Byzantine History as part of the Hellenic one none has ever told that it was something seperate (eg. hellenic) from the Roman Emprire. In the contrary I know well that all the emperors of the now called Byzantium was claimed to be Roman rulers of all the nations covered by the empire, from Romans and Hellenes to Slaves and Arabs. Well, I don’t count on anything said on TV as valid but still I was surprise to hear that question, at least in this kind of show, since it is widely known that the term Byzantium was invented by Jeronymo Wolf in 1562, more than 100 years after the empire’s fall!

*The emperor’s name as the ones of his heirs is a proof of the Roman/Latin origin of the state on their one.
